A survey of over 8,000 adults has revealed the forecourt brands drivers favour most, with supermarket petrol stations dominating the rankings.
The poll, run by YouGov as part of its BrandIndex tracker, saw 8,390 adult petrol station customers asked which forecourt brand they would consider when they next needed to fill up. Tesco was named more frequently, with 50.3% saying they would consider the supermarket giant next time they bought fuel.
The next four favoured forecourt brands were all supermarket ones, too, with Tesco followed by Sainsbury’s (41.3% would consider), then Asda (32.2%), then Morrisons (29.3%).
BP was the first traditional fuel retailer to feature in the rundown, coming in as the fifth favourite, with 28.2% of respondents saying they would consider a green and yellow canopy when their car next needed refilling.

Shell came in sixth, with a 26.9% rating, followed by Esso (24.6%),Texaco (15.6%) and Jet (10.1%), with the top 10 rundown rounded of by Gulf (6.8% would consider).
Better news was to be found for oil companies where quality is concerned: Shell was ranked as having the highest quality brand, with BP only just behind. Those two brands, alongside Esso, were ranked as being of better quality than any supermarket retailer. Texaco, meanwhile, was rated as better quality Morrisons or Asda, but trailed Sainsbury’s and Tesco in this area.
Gulf, Murco, Jet, ExxonMobil, and TotalEnergies were all rated as offering worse quality, as well as poorer value for money, than all supermarket brands, however.

Overall rankings were largely stable over last year, with all brands bar Tesco (1.5% improvement) and Texaco (1% decline) seeing score changes of under 1%. Asda and Morrisons retained precisely the same scores they did in 2025, while Sainsbury’s experienced a drop of just 0.1%.
