If your shop is not yet decorated for Christmas, perhaps you should make it a priority as a new survey has found that 24% of people like to see shops festooned with Christmas decorations.

But simply being with loved ones is top of UK’s consumers’ Christmas list, according to a new survey commissioned by M&S Bank. Nearly 50% of the 2,000 adults surveyed named it as their favourite festive thing.

Putting up the decorations was also high on the list (37%), as was settling down to a Christmas ‘special’ on the telly together (32%).

The research also found that one in two Britons (47%) are still confident they will pull off a fantastic Christmas, despite 71% planning to spend less on celebrating this year.

When it comes to money-saving hacks, 45% will be keeping an eye out for good deals on food and drink, 42% began bagging bargains early, planning what to buy well in advance, while 34% are making, and sticking to, a Christmas budget.

One in three (33%) will be using a reward card to build up points for use in the New Year, with a further third (30%) already thinking about how they can make their Christmas leftovers go further. And one in 10 (13%) admit that they will be asking family to contribute towards the cost of Christmas dinner.

Paul Stokes, M&S Credit Card, said: “Our research indicates that many Brits are confident they’ll have a fantastic Christmas, even if they may be planning to spend a little less during the festive period than last year. Many have been making an effort to not only save up but also look for ways to be more savvy when it comes to their festive spending, whether that’s starting their Christmas shopping early, setting a budget or earning rewards on their festive purchases so that they can earn vouchers to save money on their shopping in the New Year.”
