Dairy Crest’s Cathedral City cheese brand has been awarded Which? Best Buy Cheddar, after competing in a premium extra-mature and vintage cheddar cheese blind taste test alongside 13 other own-label and branded cheddars.

Which?’s panel of cheese experts nibbled their way through 14 premium cheddars before crowning Cathedral City’s Extra Mature top of the cheeses with an overall score of 83%. The team of cheese experts described the Extra Mature Cheddar as “firm-textured, with a long-lasting aftertaste, making the Cheddar distinctly moreish”.

Cathedral City beat the likes of Aldi Pilgrim’s Choice, Wyke Farms, Waitrose and Seriously Strong, to be labelled number one.

Will Hemmings, head of marketing at Dairy Crest, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have topped the rankings in the premium cheddar taste test, further cementing Cathedral City’s position as the nation’s favourite cheese. Having invested heavily in the brand this year to ensure it remains number one with consumers, with a relaunch and new campaign ‘Love Cheese, Welcome to the Club’, it is fantastic to see the cheese is still loved for its quality, taste and texture, and not just for its brand recognition.”
