Layton Blackham Insurance Brokers has launched an insurance policy which it says is the first to provide cover against cleaning up a pollution incident at an affordable premium.
Environmental legislation and potential clean-up costs can run into millions, and means the prospect of an underground leak has long been the stuff of nightmares for forecourt operators, who have baulked at prohibitively high premiums.
However, Canopy Forecourt Insurance claims to be able to offer the policy for "typically less than a thousand pounds a site" depending on the number and type of tanks, and sophistication of the leak detection system. The policy is designed for the small operator but can be tailored to multi-sites.
