Eurotank Environmental is urging retailers to train their forecourt employees to look for signs of corrosion in vent pipes on a regular basis, to prevent dangerous fuel vapour escaping onto the forecourt.
While carrying out an annual vapour recovery check, a Eurotank engineer recently spotted this heavily corroded vent pipe, which was causing fuel vapour to escape freely.
The engineer logged it as a safety observation and Eurotank reported back to the customer but early signs of corrosion can easily be picked up before it becomes a health and safety risk.
Eddie Fataciune, head of operations at Eurotank Environmental, says: “It’s hard to say how long this corroded vent pipe had been allowing vapour to escape but it could have been picked up much earlier before it became a hole.
“Forecourt owners and managers can easily train their employees to carry out visual checks of vent pipes on a regular basis so any signs of corrosion can be found early.”
