Award-winning forecourt retailer David Charman has found a way to ease bottlenecks at the tills during busy periods using mobile EPOS.

As part of an extensive refit of his Spar Parkfoot Garage at West Malling, Kent, David had a traditional three-lane EPOS solution installed by CBE at the end of 2013, but has found that at busy times queues have been growing at the tills.

After discussions with CBE, David decided to use its mobile solution which can be wheeled to any point in the shop, plugged in and offers functionality equal to that of a full EPOS solution including the new BP NCTT terminal taking credit, debit and fuel cards.

He took delivery of the mobile solution in early December 2014 and began using it immediately, in time for the busy Christmas period. In 2013 several hundred turkeys were sold and the plan for 2014 was for even higher sales. David therefore initially sited the mobile system adjacent to the butchery and delicatessen counter. The system, being part of the already existing network, simply became POS4 and all sales and transactions were managed as part of the normal shift. And at busy fuel times, the system is sited by the front door for fuel only customers. David said that the benefits of the CBE mobile POS let the store manage the peaks of its traffic flow. During the two busiest volume sales days at Parkfoot over Christmas, the store was able to manage the increase in customer throughput in the store and, because of the faster throughputs, fuel volumes remained high something he had not achieved in the 2013 Christmas rush.

David now uses the system during specialist times such as Valentines for flowers, and plans to place it by the chocolates for Mother’s Day.

Following feedback from users including David, CBE is planning a series of enhancements to the system during 2015.
