Fastned has opened two new ultra-rapid charging stations, one next to Newcastle Airport (Callerton Parkway Metro station) and the other on North Moor Road, Sunderland.
Just one Metro stop from Newcastle Airport, the new hub near Callerton Parkway Metro station offers 12 drive-through bays under a full canopy.
Meanwhile, the new North Moor Road, Sunderland, hub features an initial six charging bays as well as new Costa Coffee and Greggs outlets. Both hubs are powered by 100% renewable energy.
With the addition of these two hubs, Fastned now operates 13 sites across the North East. The network has already supported more than 273,000 charging sessions since Fastned opened at West Wear Street, Sunderland in 2019.
Highlighting the North East’s support for the arrival of faster, greener travel for Newcastle and the surrounding region, Cllr Martin Gannon, cabinet member for transport at the North East Combined Authority, says: “We are thrilled to welcome Fastned’s ultra-rapid charging hub to the North East. As more drivers look to transition to EVs, it is crucial that we have the infrastructure to support and encourage this. This eye-catching and striking charging hub, located conveniently on a Metro line and near the airport, will allow more people to pull in, charge and get back on the road.”
Tom Hurst, UK country director at Fastned, says: “Our first airport location at Newcastle International Airport is an exciting milestone and with a new Sunderland hub too, this is a big step towards a future-ready UK charging network.”
Dean Ward, director of commercial at Newcastle Airport, adds: “The opening of the hub marks another major milestone on our journey to become a net zero carbon airport by 2035 and reflects the fantastic progress being made across our business to create a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
Fastned has also been recognised by UK EV drivers in a recent Zap-Map survey, achieving the highest scores for ease of use and payment options.
