The marking directs drivers to conduct a potentially perilous manoeuvre (stock image)

Contractors working for Gloucestershire County Council have painted an arrow on the road that adjoins a Shell forecourt instructing motorists to drive into the forecourt’s exit.

The new road marking creates a filter lane in the middle of the asphalt in Quedgeley, Gloucestershire, with a right-turn arrow that clearly signals drivers should turn into the filling station’s exit, which itself bears a no-entry sign.

The cross hatchings seen here in historic imagery have been replaced with a filter lane and arrow, directing people to enter the site’s exit

One local descried the mistake as “a total balls up” to Gloucestershire Live, which originally reported the error, while councillor Mark Harris, cabinet member for highways maintenance, told the BBC: “We apologise for the mistake on the road marking”.

Harris says the authority has “already arranged for our contractor to visit the site as soon as possible to replace the right turn arrow with the correct hatching and road markings.”
