Oil firm Essar has been successful in its bid to gain an alcohol licence for a Yorkshire forecourt, despite staunch opposition being raised by locals.
The firm had sought a 24-hour licence for the Wharrels Service Station in the market town of Pudsey, but met with resistance from neighbours who said issuing a licence would create noise and antisocial behaviour.
Leeds City Council’s licensing sub-committee was told, however, that Essar had decided to slim down its application, only seeking a licence to sell alcohol until 10pm.
That request was granted by the council, the Telegraph and Argus reports, with a representative for Essar describing the firm as being “a very safe pair of hands”.
