Prices at Shell’s Cobham Services motorway site, on 29 March

The average retail price for a litre of diesel currently stands at 181.2p, a level not seen since December 2022, while unleaded is at a 28-month high, at 152ppl.

The latest assessment of the market by the RAC says the cost of filling a typical petrol car is now £10.55 higher than it was before the Iranian conflict began, with a diesel tank being £21.25 more expensive to replenish.

Diesel has risen by 1.3ppl in the last two days and is up 38.8 over the last month. Unleaded, meanwhile, rose 0.2p over the last 48 hours and is now 19.2p more expensive than on 28 February.

Wholesale unleaded prices have risen by around 22p over the same period, with wholesale diesel up 39ppl, according to RAC Foundation, a thinktank separate from the breakdown firm.

The RAC’s head of policy, Simon Williams, commented: “Average petrol prices have now reached 152p a litre - the highest in 28 months - while diesel has exceeded the 180p mark to hit 181.2p, a price we’ve not seen since December 2022. Compared to the start of the Iran conflict, it costs £10.55 more to fill up a typical family car that runs on petrol, and £21.35 more for a comparative diesel car.

“The financial strain on the eight-in-10 motorists that tell us they depend on their cars continues to build, and at a particularly rapid rate for those who drive diesel vehicles.”
