Zapmap’s monthly compilation of EV chargepoint statistics show there were 1,849 new devices added in July, bringing the total number in the UK to 84,218, spread across 41,979 locations.
That represents a 26% growth, although of the new plugs added, the vast majority (1,563) were slow (7kW or less) devices due to a high number of roadside chargers being installed – often added to existing street infrastructure such as lamp posts. Some 263 ultra-rapid (150kW+) chargers came on stream last month.
Other highlights from last month include a new charging hub being opened in Telford by Be.EV, and a 40-year lease being secured by Instavolt for a site close to Stonehenge.
Despite this, and high levels of investment from private equity firms, many chargepoint companies continue to find margins elusive, with firms insisting the sector’s profitability goals are founded in the long-term. Gridserve recently posted an £80m loss, while Fastned lost £23m in 2024.
