Welcome Break is about to open a new roadside services 10 miles to the south of Nottingham, roughly two years after a controversial planning application was approved.
Hickling Services, located on the A46/A406 roundabout near Melton Mowbray will open its doors to customers on Thursday, July 24, offering travellers a KFC drive through and restaurant, plus Greggs and Little Waitrose in the main amenity building.
A Starbucks drive through and café features in a separate building, while parking will be available for over 50 cars, around 15 HGVs, two coaches, and two car and caravans. EV charging for 20 vehicles is also offered on site, with 20 bays set to be installed over the next decade. Unlike larger motorway services, the petrol filling station is located immediately in front of the main building, with parking spread out across the plot rather than being concentrated in one main car park.
Welcome Break first proposed Hickling Services in 2022, but it wasn’t until August 2023 that planning permission was granted. Over 160 objections were raised against the development, with many questioning whether the largely rural location was the right place for a new roadside services.
Welcome Break was clearly successful in the end, with Rushcliffe Borough Council granting permission, and no appeal necessary. The services is creating around 100 jobs.
