The land is surrounded by homes, and many residents voiced support for the project

A patch of wasteland close to the centre of Middlesbrough will soon be home to a filling station and drive-thru cafe after EG On The Move gained planning permission to build a new-to-sector site.

The land, on Marton Road, a stone’s throw from the A66 trunk road that borders the north of the port town, has lain vacant for more than two decades after a school that previously occupied the site was closed and demolished.

So prominent a blot on the landscape is the vacant plot that it was listed as a key ‘eyesore’ site by Middlesbrough Council in 2020, with the authority keen for it to be redeveloped.

That wish now looks set to come to fruition, after a planning bid submitted by EGOTM in April 2025 met with approval from the council.

The firm now has the green light to construct a four-pump-island forecourt served by two 75,000 underground tanks, alongside a 4,090sq ft shop with a food-to-go concession.

A separate coffee shop with drive-thru lane will also be built, while the EGOTM will install four EV charging bays and 30 parking spaces.
