Following similar reductions by Ionity and MFG, Shell is the latest firm to lower electricity prices for EV drivers, as chargepoint operators strive to attract owners who must charge on the road.
The oil major has introduced two new offers in a bid to win customers for its Recharge network, with the Summer Midday Saver, and Night Saver discounts dropping prices to 60p per kWh, or 42p for Shell Recharge subscribers who pay £9.99 a month for lower charging rates.
Earlier this month MFG introduced a 25% discount, dropping its prices to 59p per kWh across its network until the end of September, while Ionity recently introduced a discount for drivers who only charge to 80%.
Such price reductions are potentially linked to the low number of drivers who require on-the-road charging, with 90% of EV owners being able to replenish their vehicles at home, where electricity is significantly cheaper; and the significant investment chargers require, with some grid connections costing over £1m.
Shell offers a broad range of prices across its network, with nine separate rates based on location, time of day, payment method and subscriber status.
Its highest undiscounted rate is 89p per kWh for 50kW+ speeds for drivers paying via contactless between 7am and 12pm, and 3pm and 7pm, a rate that drops to 60p during Summer Midday Saver hours of 12pm to 3pmn, and Night Saver times of 7pm to 7am, with a further reduction to 42p to subscribers charging during those off-peak hours.
The company has another set of rates for its Shell Recharge On-Street network, which it brought into its fold following the acquisition of Ubitricity in 2021.
Janine Albrecht Webb, Shell’s UK general manager for mobility and convenience, says the company is “committed to making the EV charging experience easier, more convenient and better value for our customers”.
