The plot is large enough to accommodate three retail units, parking for 36 cars, and EV charging

A disused filling station in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, is set to be redeveloped into a parade of shops complete with parking for 36 vehicles and charging for six EVs.

The forecourt was built in the late 1980s but has since traded as a hand car wash, taxi base and car sales business, while proposals to erect 23 apartments on the land were approved in 2006 but never materialised.

Now, a firm called Darwen Developments is seeking permission from the local authority to knock down the forecourt and rebuild it as a small shopping parade, which will, if the plans are approved, feature three retail units, with two covering 1,205sq ft, and one larger outlet comprising 4,197sq ft.

While no tenants have been mooted for the project, the developers envisage two food-to-go outlets and one convenience store will trade from the site.

While still in the planning stages, the proposals demonstrate the adaptability of forecourt land and its potential future uses once petrol and diesel cars disappear from the roads in the decades to come.
