Upgrades involve new chargers, and better access for those with mobility issues (Penny’s Northumberland Grandstand Services pictured)

Chargepoint operator Instavolt has completed a comprehensive suite of upgrades across 10 forecourts owned by the Top 50 Indie Penny Petroleum.

Instavolt says it has finished “the latest phase of its nationwide upgrade programme across Penny Petroleum forecourt sites in the North of England”, replacing older, slower chargers with more reliable and modern ultra-fast machines. Nine of the Penny sites now feature 120kW devices, with one having a 150kW unit.

Catering for drivers with disabilities has been “a key focus” of the upgrades, with fully accessible charging bays installed at five of the Penny EV locations.

Sites have also benefitted from widened and rationalised parking bays to improve general chargepoint access, in part to reflect the needs of larger EVs such as electric vans.

Delvin Lane, InstaVolt’s chief executive, says the Penny improvements are part of a multimillion-pound upgrade scheme being undertaken by the provider, explaining:

“Older units have been replaced with faster BYD120 chargers and improved bay layouts. We’re ensuring every InstaVolt site meets the same high standards drivers rely on – quick and easy charging available 24/7 and powered by 100% renewable energy.”
