The Scottish government has earmarked £3.6m of taxpayers’ cash to install at least 3,000 new public chargepoints across the Glasgow City Region, an area covering over 1,300 square miles.
Transport Scotland has been tasked with administering the funds, and is actively seeking a chargepoint operator (CPO) to install and run the new sockets.
The plugs will comprise on-street installations, and chargepoints in in local-authority-owned car parks.
Susan Aitken, chair of Glasgow City Region Cabinet, said that “demand for electric vehicles is going to dramatically increase over the coming years”, and the area must be “ready to support that transition”.
Aitken described the project as “one of the most significant public EV charging projects in the UK”.
