Police believe the thieves were targeting the cash terminal attached to the pump (stock image)

Police in Northern Ireland are hunting for a trio of would-be thieves who took an angle grinder to a petrol pump in County Armagh.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reports that the individuals struck at 3:35am on the morning of  August 14 at the Forkhill Road filling station in Newry.

Officers believe that rather than trying to steal the pump itself, the attack was targeting its attached credit-card reader and automated cash terminal.

The PSNI says one of the suspects was in his 30s wearing black Adidas tracksuit trousers and black top. Another was wearing shorts and a navy hoodie with white writing, while the third was wearing jeans and a light jacket with a hood. The first man was wearing welding goggles, while the other two sported face masks.

While the pump was damaged by the attack, the three men left the forecourt having been unsuccessful in their endeavour, driving away in a white hatchback with no registration plates.
