Nottingham City Council has granted EG On The Move planning permission to construct a new forecourt on a prominent city-centre plot that various firms have tried and failed to redevelop over the years.
While currently trading as a hand car wash, the London Road site was for many years a filling station, being subject to a knock-down rebuild in 1991. Planning documents describe the site – which is roughly half a mile south of Nottingham railway station – as today being in a state of “disrepair”, however.
The plot is clearly one that developers can see the potential of. In 2016 permission was granted to build a shisha lounge on the land, though this was never constructed.. A drive-thru restaurant was proposed in 2018, though this application was subsequently withdrawn before another application, again for a drive-thru restaurant, was submitted, before this too was withdrawn the following year.
In 2021 the local authority gave the go-ahead for a £25m, nine-storey apartment block with basement parking, a gym and food outlets to be built. This also failed to materialise.
Fast-forward to June 2025 and EG On The Move applied to build a new forecourt on the site, with the council granting permission on 12 November.
With that matter settled, EGOTM can go ahead with its plans, which will see 20 jobs created and broadly comprise erecting a four-pump-island forecourt overseen by a 3,250sq ft shop, fronted with parking 13 bays. Four EV charging spots will also feature, as will four cycle stands, and parking for five staff vehicles.
