New hub is a co-production from two charging firms set up by automotive execs

Chargepoint provider Ionity has opened what it terms its “most urban UK charging site” to date, with project being undertaken in partnership with Hubber, which was set up by three former Tesla execs.

Ionity is a joint venture from car firms including Ford, Mercedes, Hyundai, VW and BMW, while Hubber emerged after Tesla disbanded its UK Supercharger arm.

The Aston facility sits a mile to the north of Birmingham New Street railway station and features 12 charging bays delivering electricity at speeds up to 400kW.

The project was begun by Hubber, which acquired a former car park and developed it into a charging hub before teaming up with Ionity. Rather than operate hubs itself, Hubber offers existing operators a turnkey solution, buying and developing urban sites, often with a view to catering for commercial motorists such as cabbies and delivery drivers.

Ionity’s UK and Ireland country manager, Andreas Atkins, commented: “By locating high-power charging directly within the city, we’re making sustainable travel more accessible for drivers who may not have access to home charging.”

Harry Fox, Hubber’s chief executive and co-founder, said the firm only acquired the site four months ago, and commented that Hubber’s mission is “to power the future or urban mobility by regenerating underutilised property and removing the friction from infrastructure development”.
