An independent fuel retailer in Somerset has made the decision to end its 20-year-plus relationship with Spar, selecting Co-op Wholesale as its new supplying partner.

The Texaco-liveried forecourt in Ilminster had been supplied by Spar since it was acquired by the parents of now-owner Laurie McKinnon, who was drawn to Co-op Wholesale by its fresh produce in particular.

McKinnon described switching suppliers after so long as a “major decision” but added that “partnering with Co-op Wholesale is the right decision”.

The store now wears Nisa branding and has been kitted out with new chillers to accommodate a greater range of fresh food.

The site is said to be at “the heart of the local community” in the market town of Ilminster, which has a population of around 6,000 – many of whom are said to still be referring to it as ‘The Spar’ due to force of habit.

To mark the change McKinnon and Co-op Wholesale’s Making a Difference Locally charity joined forces to make a £500 donation to the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance fund.

Ian King, Co-op Wholesale’s business development and growth director at Co-op Wholesale says his firm was “delighted” McKinnon had chosen to go with his firm, adding:

“Laurie’s store has built an excellent reputation in Ilminster over the years, and we’re excited to be supporting the next stage of its journey. We look forward to working together to help the business grow while continuing to serve its local community.”
