Tie-up should see shoppers able to bag bargains, and shopkeers improve margins, all while reducing waste

Technology can be used for all manner of purposes, but reducing food waste is one of the better applications to have emerged from our connected world. Now, a partnership between epos provider Shopmate, and food-waste-reduction firm Gander, looks to bring positive results for all.

For the 4,200 UK shopkeepers using the Shopmate platform, the tie-up means that rather than hope customers will spot discounted items on shelves, they can now automatically inform shoppers in the area of the items they have reduced to clear.

Customers, meanwhile, need no longer to rummage around chiller cabinets hunting for discounted items they might fancy, instead being able to browse reduced stock using the Gander app from the comfort of their smartphone.

Brian Eagle-Brown, managing director at ShopMate, says that with retailers being “under increasing pressure to manage costs, reduce waste and operate more efficiently”, the Gander integration offers “a practical solution to improve commercial returns and reduce food waste”.

Stacey Williams, Gander’s business development director, described working with Shopmate as “a really important integration”, and one that “significantly lowers the barrier for convenience retailers to access Gander and immediately start reducing waste, improving margins and engaging their local communities.”
