Esso has launched a limited trial of its new Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel on 20 sites in the South East.

The new fuel is suitable for use in all diesel engines compatible with B7 fuel, and Esso claims it is the first of its kind to be sold on retail sites in the UK.

Patrick Rutherford, Esso UK retail sales manager, said Esso was excited to be bringing the Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel trial to UK drivers. He explained that focus groups had revealed an increasing appetite for fuel products with greener credentials: ”This pilot allows us to deliver a lower emission fuel choice with the same set of additives that we have in our standard premium diesel, so it provides the same engine protection.

“It is an interchangeable ’drop-in’ fuel that allows consumers to fill up with no risk because it meets the required fuel standards.

”We recognise that not everyone who wants to lower their emissions can afford an electric vehicle. With the launch of Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel we’re bringing a new choice to the consumer who may be focused in that area, but can’t switch from their diesel car. It gives them a convenient choice now with all the great advantages that our customers have come to expect from high-quality Esso fuels, but with the added benefit of being an immediate, lower-carbon-intensive choice.

”And it demonstrates that the existing fuel infrastructure can deliver lower-emission fuels in a familiar way that will appeal to many consumers.”

Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel is made with a minimum of 25% premium renewable hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) derived from RTFO(4) compliant wastes and residues – in this case, used cooking oil. The fuel has 15% lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) than our regular Synergy Diesel(1), meaning that f or every 50 litres of Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel used, there is on average a 25kg saving in lifecycle GHG emissions(2).

In launching the trial, Esso stated that the average UK diesel car driver travels 9,400 miles per year, but if they were to switch to Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel, the annual saving in lifecycle GHG emissions would be equivalent to the emissions associated with fuelling that vehicle for two round trips from London to Edinburgh) (approximately 1,410 miles).

ExxonMobil is investing more than $15billion through to 2027 on initiatives to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, Esso plans to provide more than 40,000 barrels per day of lower-emissions fuels by 2025, and have a further goal of 200,000 barrels per day by 2030. It believes achieving this goal will help society reduce more than 25 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions from the transportation sector.
