Shell has joined forces with the Coffee Republic brand to bring self-serve coffee to around 400 company-owned sites in the UK.

Following a trial for six months in four Shell forecourts, the Coffee Republic brand will rollout in mid to late October, with 200 expected to be in operation by the end of the year.

The coffee-to-go range will include premium coffees such as caffe latte, cappuccino and flat white, along with all the espresso-based varieties that are available in Coffee Republic’s standalone outlets.

Melanie Lane, Shell retailer general manager UK, said: “The Shell and Coffee Republic relationship presents a very attractive offer for our customers and will appeal to customers who spend time on the road and require quality fuel and premium coffee on the go.”

According to research by HIM, the move could attract a new type of customer to Shell forecourts because Coffee Republic outlets tend to attract a higher proportion of both female and more affluent customers than a typical Shell site.

Interviews with 300 Coffee Republic customers and 630 Shell shoppers by the shopper research company last year revealed that one in four would buy coffee from a Shell store.
